These are not flowers, 2020
‘These are not flowers’ is a zine that explores ‘still life’ as a literal concept. Being from a really dry and hot region in the south of Spain, seeing green grass and flower blossoms was never the norm when I was growing up.
When I spent the first lockdown at home with my family, I really wanted to take close-up pictures of flowers, but flowers shops were obviously closed, and there was no other way to find them. This is when I came up with this project’s concept: what is ‘still life’ if not life that’s portrayed as not being alive at all? Can’t the objects we photograph just be inanimate in the first place? Are stillness and life two incompatible concepts?
The result of all these questions is this homemade photography series in which I aimed to portray fake flowers as if they were real, while posing a contradiction by reaffirming that these are, in fact, not flowers.
